Ida Maria
biography / portrait

It all started in Nesna. I come from a tiny tiny place far north in Norway called Nesna. Nesna has got 1776 inhabitants and one gas station, two grocerystores, one closed-down shoefactory called Nesnalobben - and a lot of mountains. So. What do you do.

I used to skate a lot around Samvirkelaget and Shell, the gas station, with my rollerblades. My parents tried to make me play the piano, it did not work out at all. But one day when I was baking an pizza in the oven I decided to learn how to play the guitar. I made a song, and burned the pizza. All of the songs I made back then was deeply autobiographical, one of them was called Big Fat Cow. My dad is a musician and he had a jazzband that I played with a couple of times. We have one pub on Nesna called Thorvalds (earlier named so beautifully: "Sjallabais") where I played my first concerts when I was fourteen. It was cool.

Turned sixteen and wanted to move to South Africa, just to check it out, but my parents didn't want that. So I got permission to move to Bergen, in the southwest coast of Norway. Not quite as far as South-Africa, but I enjoyed it anyway. In Bergen I lived poor and hungry, in a rotten apartment in the city. I loved it and I miss it. That time I played a lot of solo gigs around Norway with my guitar and my bass. And from time to time I played or recorded bits of music with some of the wonderful producers and musicians in Bergen: Elektro Ompaniet, Kjetil B. Aaboe, HP Gundersen, Daniel Birkeland, Calle Hamre, Geir Luedy, Ole Ludvig Kruger and Thomas Dahl.

But. In Bergen it rains a LOT and I decided to try someplace where it was not raining that much. And maybe find a place to stay with proper windows, and floors that were somehow hanging together. I moved to Uppsala, pretended to study, and stole some musicians from Stockholm (Johannes Lindberg, Olle Lundin and Stefan Törnby) and formed my band. Now I've turned 23, live in a small house outside Stockholm with my boyfriend Sebastian and the guitarist in his band, Gustav. We run the record label Nesna Records together from our house. And me, I am a bit eerie, I guess I am a bit like a cloud in that way. Floating in space. I am a weirdo, but in my "older" days I´ve become better and better at communicating with the outside world. Or maybe I´m just bullshitting you, I don´t know really.
Love, Ida Maria
