Philippa Ea
biography / portrait

Scandinavian based singer and composer Ea Philippa released her first and critically praised album ”Distant Heavens” on March 7th this year. The Danish press has described her music as “Chamber music performed with Björks temperament mixed with the nerve of Under Byen”, and another critic wrote: “This is indeed a very elevating debut – one which has perhaps brought us closer to the sound of angels in love”.

Together with her orchestra of nine women, Ea Philippa gives beautiful and quite stunning performances. This is the kind of music that will take you to far away places – places whose existence you weren’t aware of, but that you have always wished for or just dreamt of.

The listeners are led to a magical universe behind the blue veil of consciousness, and to a galaxy far from the Milky Way, where they are spun into a world of magic and fairytales. In this world you will find dream weavers in palaces built of cobwebs, untameable magicians, musical horses and galaxy princesses, who can do quite extraordinary things.

Ea Philippa’s rounded vocal is uplifted by her intriguing compositions for strings and chorus. To this is added a touch of abstract beats and sounds.

Her ensemble consists of ten glorious women. In addition to her self on piano and lead vocal, she has two cellos, a violin, viola, double bass, a backing vocal group of four and a percussionist. All together this instrumentation forms a quite new tone, combining elements from both the classical and the popular musical worlds, and at the same time giving a new approach to the female ensemble by expressing a wish to recognize the power, the beauty and the mystery hidden within the female sphere.

The band performs barefoot on a carpet of rose petals, dressed as elf like creatures of the woods. During the concerts Ea Philippa sometimes reads from her big book of fairytales with descriptions of her universe. To complete the magical experience, the concerts are often complemented with different visual effects as soap bubbles, sparklers, gold dust and so on.

All the music is composed, arranged and produced by Ea Philippa, who has also written all the lyrics. All of her musicians are educated from the Danish conservatories.

During the spring she has given concerts, among other places, at the famous Round Tower, built in the 17th century in Central Copenhagen, at the atmospheric 18th century Court Theatre, also in Central Copenhagen, and at the National Danish Radio Building.
